Transit Data Results

This section will detail the analysis and results from transportation data provided by SFMTA. Each bus line will have its most popular Chinatown stop(s) shown and a link for in-depth analysis of each line. Non-Chinatown stops will be included in their links for deeper analysis.

SFMTA collects bus and ridership data for its own internal analysis. The data used in this project comprises ridership data that includes people getting on and off the bus. This ridership data is collected by having special trackers in some buses in each line across all MUNI lines.

Based on the numbers that we have seen for ridership at each bus stop, Stockton Street is by far the most popular street visited in terms of overall numbers from each bus stop. Most bus stops that are on Stockton Street see an average weekday daily ridership of 1000+ passengers, with the Stockton & Pacific Avenue stop seeing over 9000 commuters on an average weekday. Stockton & Washington Street and the Stockton & Sacramento Street stops come in as our second and third most popular stops, with over 7200 and 4600 daily weekday riders, respectively.

Other bus stops also see sufficient daily weekday ridership, with every stop, except two, maintaining at least 200 commuters a day. Stops that are outside of Stockton Street and some Kearny Street stops maintain a range of just under 200 commuters to 400/500 commuters, depending on the stop.

Proof of Sufficient Ridership (Technical Details)

In addition to the analysis of the ridership data, this project includes a collaboration with UC Berkeley PATH, where they developed a technical model that uses the ridership data at each bus stop, which is then used to create ridership expectations at each stop. This is used to help determine sufficient ridership at a stop level. Further details on the technical model can be found in the technical report found on the last page.

Based on the technical model found in our written report on Chinatown ridership, we have found several bus stops along various routes that have higher-than-expected activity. These stops are the stops highlighted above, where we displayed the most popular Chinatown stops in each of the routes that run through Chinatown.

Below are all the bus stops in Chinatown visualized. All bus icons can be clicked on to reveal additional information about each bus stop. The map can be expanded by clicking on the expanding box icon on the lower right.

To summarize, we believe that all bus lines in Chinatown have sufficient activity, where there should be no service reductions in Chinatown.
