Community Survey Analysis
This section will detail the results found from the analysis of the survey results. There are three stories that we want to highlight from our survey results and a separate analysis for transportation data provided by SFMTA. A summary of each section will be provided along with a link to the full analysis on each section.
Here is what we have learned about transit dependency in Chinatown:
69% (145) of youth respondents, 90% (1,046) of Adults, and 97% (795) of elders are transit-dependent.
Overall, the vast majority of respondents are reliant on public transit, in particular, 97% of elders responded that they are reliant on public transit to Chinatown.
Of San Francisco residents who responded to the intercept survey, 92% need public transit to reach Chinatown, and 73.8% of non-residents also require public transit.
Most locals either take public transit or walk, showing that the Chinatown community needs public transit to get around the city.
Here is what we learned about people’s trip purposes in Chinatown:
Chinatown offers a robust selection of trip reasons that ranges from medical visits to work to shopping and much more, being a destination hub for many different people.
Most visitors use Chinatown or transit stops in Chinatown for Retail Shopping, Work, and School as our top 3 trip purposes, followed by medical visits, visiting friends and family, etc.
Retail Shopping, Medical Visits, and Going to Work purposes are the most dependent on public transit and tourist attractions are least dependent on public transit.

The most popular times for people coming and leaving Chinatown
Most Popular Arriving Times: 8 am and 4 pm.
Most Popular Departure Times: 8 am, 3 pm, and 4 pm.
On average, the T has the most people riding, with roughly 23 people per train getting off at Chinatown and roughly 19 getting on the train, based on our data.
